The Playhouse project local volunteers have recently purchased a former swimming pool from Angus Council and have ambitious plan to convert into a 3 screen digital cinema and art centre for the area. Currently there is no cinema facility for 30 miles radius of Montrose area in Dundee and Aberdeen and we would like to fill that gap with a modern community run full time cinema and art centre.
Our next stage now we have the building is to get the building warrant approval (planning is already granted) so we can hold a community DOY SOS Event to strip back the old pool ready for conversion. So far over 50 local tradesman and DIY Enthusiasts have signed up to the event along with companies pledging time and materials including a window firm offering new windows for free.
We plan to film the event and create a promo video for potential funders and sponsors so we can raise the £2 million required for the full project. This will be a mixture of lottery, creative Scotland grant funding, investment, sponsorship and local fundraising.
The planning is well under way with local CDM professional offering their time to assist in creating a health and safety plan and also an architect and engineer to assist with the overseeing of the strip out.
The main project -
Montrose Playhouse Project SCIO is a group of local volunteers whose ambitious plan is to convert the former swimming pool situated on The Mall, Montrose into a new cultural arts facility & three-screen digital cinema called The Playhouse for the benefit of Montrose and the surrounding areas.
We want The Playhouse to be accessible and welcoming to all members of the community from babies to pensioners and to enhance, develop and advance education and the arts. As well as the cinema screens, The Playhouse will have multi-purpose rooms, conference space and a café bar.
The Playhouse will show the latest blockbuster films as well as classic and independent films, live screenings of, for example, plays, musicals, operas and ballets and even educational tours of museums.
The multipurpose rooms and screens with retractable seating will be available for hire by the public and local groups and businesses for all manner of purposes such as rehearsal or exhibition space for the many local artists and musicians.
The Reel Café Bar, will serve a diverse range of food and drinks sourced from local suppliers wherever possible.
We have already attracted start-up funding totaling almost £30,000 from First Port, The National Lottery Investing in Ideas and Angus Council which enabled us to set up the SCIO and to employ Ron Inglis, a Specialist Cinema Consultant to produce our initial Business Plan and Feasibility study as well as employing architects, surveyors and engineers to help with investigating and costing the Project. We were also able to build this website to keep people informed.
The project as a whole has over 5000 likes on Facebook and a huge following in the area. Our business plan and feasibility study show a need for this type of facility in Montrose area with 70,000 people within 15 miles of the town having to travel 60 mile round trips to the cities for this simple facility.
We have also ran a series of fundraising events including "A Night at the M'Oscars" which raised over £7000 and An Outdoor Christmas Cinema day and Market which raised over £1000. In 2017 we started monthly fundraising & market research cinema screenings in Montrose Academy's assembly hall which have been really popular and is helping us build up an audience base for the main project.
